Calaveras County

Home of the California Gold Rush and Jumping Frog, Mark Twain made Calaveras County famous when he wrote about the "Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" in 1865.  Today, 21 winery tasting rooms offer a relaxed and casual atmosphere near historic and picturesque Gold Rush towns, alongside art galleries, antique shops, Gold Rush museums, giant Sequoia trees, cave tours, river rafting, mountain resorts and more.  Calaveras County is a vacation destination located 133 miles east of San Francisco and 135 miles west of Lake Tahoe.
