Lake County

Four distinct appellations comprise the Lake County AVA, with a total of 8,300 acres planted to wine grapes.  Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted variety with 3,200 acres, and Sauvignon Blanc is second with 1,850 acres.  Lake County has fourteen wineries and historically crushes about one percent of California’s grape tonnage.

Clear Lake, the largest natural lake entirely within California’s borders, is the focal point for Lake County.  Vineyards lie at 1,300 to 2,000 feet in elevation, within site of the dormant volcano, Mt. Konocti. The cool conditions at these elevations result in a later start to the growing season.  Warm summers ripen the grapes during the day, and in the evening, temperatures drop rapidly, helping to maintain moderate sugar levels and balanced acidity.
