Mendocino County

Located directly north of Sonoma County, about 90 miles north of San Francisco, this region is bounded by the coastal mountain range to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the great northern forests that blanket about 60 percent of the county. These lush forests are home to the tallest trees in the world—the giant native Sequoia or Coast Redwood trees, many of them several hundred years old.
The Mendocino AVA encompasses 275,200 total acres, with 17,000 planted to grapevines; 4,600 acres are planted to Chardonnay, 2,200 acres to Pinot Noir, and 2,500 acres to Cabernet Sauvignon, with approximately 18 percent of the total acreage certified organic. Seventy-two wineries and more than 250 growers harvest approximately 561,000 wine grape tons in Mendocino, representing about two percent of the state’s wine tonnage. The majority of wine grapes thrive in the region’s hidden valleys and along the rugged ridge tops.
