Merlot
Merlot (mair-loh) is one of the oldest wine varieties of "vitis vinifera" (the name for the wine grape species). It has been long prized as a partner in blending with Cabernet Sauvignon, but its popularity as a varietal in its own right has risen dramatically—especially in California. Soft, luscious character and gentle tannins make Merlot more approachable than many Cabernet Sauvignons. The wine is medium- to full-bodied, with plum, current and black cherry aromas and flavors—often with subtle, appealing herbal notes. Aging in oak barrels adds rich toast and vanilla complexity. Enjoy with grilled burgers, New York strip or hearty stews.
